AHB&R Sector Council's first newsletter.
Since 1991, the
residential construction industry has
had a sector council operating in the
Atlantic Region. In the early to mid-1990s,
we were a Regional Industry
Training Council (RITC) working in
partnership with Human Resources
Development Canada offices in Nova
Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador,
Prince Edward Island and New
Brunswick. RITCs were employer-based.
They coordinated the delivery of
industry-identified training to upgrade
the skills of both existing and new
employees, to take advantage of
changes in housing technology or
develop new opportunities in the sector.
Training continues to be a priority for
the Council, but our
industry partnership with HRDC and
the Provinces increasingly includes
projects that address the broader
human resources issues for residential
construction. This involves studies on
the impact of the underground
economy on our sector, residential
construction skills and labour
shortages, promotion of trades careers,
examining ways to reduce seasonal and
EI dependency, and exploring new
opportunities in the growing
renovation side of the industry.
